Ponge, Francis
(1899-1988)
   poet
Born in Montpellier, Francis Ponge, a leading existentialist poet, recognized in all things a primal ontology, perceiving the autonomy of their existence, which he sought to express in prose and poetry. Considered by jean-paul sartre as the poet of existentialism, Ponge can be seen as a spokesperson for a materialist and linguistic philosophy, as he saw poetry as a means to explore the world and the self and, in his minute description of ordinary things, he came to modify the surrealist techniques and developed his own style of language. Ponge's writings include Le Parti pris du choses (1942), Proêmes (1948), Le Grand Recueil (1961), Le Savon (1967), and Nioque de l'avant printemps (1983). With La Fabriqué du pré (which contains his typical play on words, 1971) and Comme une Figue de paroles et pourquoi (1977), he seems to play humorously with text, context, and phrases as a way of perceiving the world.
